How to Call: Rhythm, Repetition and Voice
For first-time coxswains — when in the stroke to call, which calls to repeat, how to use your voice, and which calls fit which situation.
Common coxing practice, collected from experience rather than one source — the coach’s habits come first.
1. Calls follow the stroke
- One call per stroke. The best moment is just after the catch, as the drive begins — when the crew most needs it.
- Call relaxation, rhythm and length on the recovery, when the crew has time to adjust without being interrupted.
- If you can’t see the rowers, listen to the blades: once the catches sound together, make the power call.
2. Repeat or not?
- Power calls (
Press!,Legs!,Get legs.): repeat — once per stroke for 3 to 5 strokes, e.g.Legs! Legs! Legs!. You’re setting the rhythm. - Rhythm and relaxation calls (
Nice and loose.,Swing.,Take it with composure.): don’t repeat — say it once, let them take a stroke, then move on. - Countdowns (
Last minute!,Ten more!): keep them in order — one minute, thirty seconds and the last 20 once each, then count the last 10 stroke by stroke. - Encouragement (
You got it.,That's it, that's it.): once when they get it right, twice at most — don’t let it become filler.
3. Voice and pace
- Power: drop your voice, short and punchy, a little louder than usual.
- Relax and settle: low, slow, slightly drawn out, so the crew relaxes as they listen.
- Sprints and countdowns: louder and faster the closer you get.
- Don’t use one voice all race. The change itself is the signal — when your voice changes, the crew knows the rhythm is changing.
4. One idea per call, five words max
To ask for relaxation and legs, call Loose on one stroke and Legs on the next — don’t combine them.
5. Don’t overcall
Every 10 to 15 strokes, leave at least one or two strokes silent. The crew needs to feel it for themselves, and the boat needs quiet too.
More calls, with how to use them
Tap it along.— carry the boat lightly and steadily, no big power. When: warm-up, or easing off after a piece. Repeat: once; again a few strokes later if needed. Voice: low, slow, relaxed.Big back ends.— make the back half of each stroke big and complete, using the layback. When: the stroke is getting short, especially after a rate rise. Repeat: every stroke for 3 to 4 strokes. Voice: in the back half of the drive, lean on “Big”, voice going down.Breathe.— deep breath, relax. When: after hard work, when tense, to settle the crew. Repeat: once, then again a stroke or two later. Voice: low, slow, drawn out so they breathe with you.Controlled and composed.— controlled movement, composed minds. When: a crew closing, high pressure, the rate wanting to run away. Repeat: once. Voice: low and even; slow down, don’t get louder.Nice and loose.— loose, not stiff. When: steady rhythm; shoulders and arms tightening. Repeat: once. Voice: low and slow.Get legs./More pressure on legs.— legs. When: through the drive. Repeat: 3 to 5 strokes. Voice: short and strong, one per stroke.20, hold it.— hold it for these 20. When: a planned 20-stroke piece. Repeat: call it at the start, then every 5:15… 10… 5. Voice: clear at the start, even in the middle. That's it, that's it.— yes, exactly. When: when it’s right. Repeat: twice. Voice: firm, not drawn out.

Press!、Legs!、Get legs.):重复。 Legs!
Nice and loose.、Swing.、Take it with composure.):
Last minute!、Ten more!):报数要有序。
You got it.、That's it, that's it.):做对了喊一次,最多连喊 2 次,别当口头禅。
Nice and loose.—— 放松、不僵。 Get legs./More pressure on legs.—— 腿用力。 That's it, that's it.—— 对,就是这样。
