On-Water Calls: Experienced Crews
Short, rhythmic calls for experienced crews — what each means, when to call it, whether to repeat it and how to say it.
For experienced crews — a four, or rowers with a set training plan: short, rhythmic, one breath, called on the rate. When you can’t see what the rowers are doing, your voice carries the power, the rhythm and how much is left.
Sources: NowNow (heard at practice, word for word), Row2k (Row2k coxswain calls list), Wolfson (Cambridge Wolfson coxing notes), Common (widely used among coxswains, not from one source — the coach’s habits come first). (To confirm) marks my reading of a call’s meaning.
