A Coxswain's Toolbox
Tried-and-true technique calls — and the pro tip of speaking with the rhythm of the boat.
From Sophia Steck’s toolbox in The Ultimate USC Coxswain Guide — a coxswain at USC for two years.
Every coxswain builds a toolbox of calls that work for them and their crew. It grows and changes with experience.
Pro tip: align calls with the stroke. Speak with the rhythm of the boat and use intonation to drive the point home — if you want length, say Leeengthen; if you want quick catches, say Sharp!

Sharp!
回桨与入水
Turn off the hamstrings on the recovery(回桨时放松腘绳肌)Controooolled into the catch(有控制地滑向入水)Light toes on the recovery(回桨时脚趾放轻)Light toes, strong heels(脚趾轻,脚跟稳)Chins and chests up at the catch(入水时抬下巴、挺胸)
拉桨
Preeesss through the footboards(用力蹬踏板)Drive the body back(把身体推向后)Legs, swing(腿,摆体)Press, send(蹬,送)Open up that puddle(把水窝拉开)Build a mound on the oar through the middrive(拉桨中段在桨上堆起水丘)Stay connected to the water(始终和水连在一起)
结束
Direct to the sternum(直接拉到胸骨)Sit proud at the finish(结束时坐直、挺拔)Squeeze and tap(夹紧、按桨出水)
节奏与感觉
Rhythm(节奏)Breathe(呼吸)Long and loose(长而松)Move with the boat(跟着船一起动)Flow through the stroke(让整桨流畅)
我的补充
加速 · 节奏 · 力量——待补充。
